TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) has been mandatory on all new cars sold in the UK since 2014, and it’s a system that requires proper attention whenever tyres are changed.

What TPMS Does

TPMS monitors the air pressure in each tyre and alerts the driver – via a dashboard warning light – if pressure drops to a potentially unsafe level. It’s a safety system, not a gimmick, and ignoring the warning light isn’t a safe option.

Why It Matters at Tyre Change

TPMS sensors sit inside the wheel, attached to the valve. They can be damaged during tyre changes if the job isn’t done carefully. Sensors also have batteries with a finite lifespan – typically 5 to 10 years – and may need replacing independently of the tyre itself.

Some vehicles use indirect TPMS (calculating pressure from wheel speed sensors), and others use direct sensors in each wheel. The type affects what’s involved in maintenance and replacement.
