They’re subject to scuffing on corners, high sidewall flexing under load, and the kind of extended static periods that accelerate rubber degradation. Specialist trailer tyres are designed to handle these conditions better than repurposed car or van rubber.

Load rating is critical here too, particularly on heavier trailers. Always match the tyre to the trailer’s maximum permitted load.

Age Before Appearance

As with caravan and motorhome tyres, age matters. A trailer tyre that looks fine may have cracked or degraded internally if it’s been stored outdoors or left static for long periods. We’d recommend checking the DOT date code and treating anything over five or six years old with caution.
