Tyres are one of the most safety-critical parts of your vehicle, and also one of the most neglected. A few simple checks can extend their lifespan, improve fuel economy, and more importantly – keep you safe. Check Pressure Regularly

Tyre pressure should be checked at least monthly and before long journeys. Under-inflation is the single biggest cause of premature tyre wear and can increase fuel consumption significantly. Your correct pressures are in the handbook or on the door placard – not on the tyre sidewall, which shows the maximum pressure.

Watch the Tread Depth

The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, but most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing at 3mm for safety in wet weather. You can check depth with a 20p coin – if the outer band of the coin is hidden when inserted into a tread groove, you’re above the limit.

Rotation and Alignment

Uneven wear is often the first sign of a tracking or suspension issue. If one tyre is wearing faster than others, it’s worth having the wheel alignment checked before buying new tyres – otherwise the same thing will happen again.
